What is AwesomeAlternatives.org? That's a new project that we're working on in partnership with PrivacyTools.io. Dedicated in creating awesome curated lists of open source software recommendations. Stay tuned, any updates about "AwesomeAlternatives" will be posted here as well.

AwesomeAdmin The forum software of our choice is Flarum, a great and light-weight alternative to Discourse and NodeBB.

Discourse is very different really, Flarum isn't an "alternative" to it at all it's a different type of forum software. Most notably Discourse has a tech stack that no one really uses, doesn't play well with virtualisation, and is target towards corporate-type websites.

As for NodeBB I can't even think of a live-example I've ever used (not surprising when it's still in Beta). Its UI leaves much to be desired, it's basically like the OLD Discourse except that it's written in NodeJS. The most powerful forum software, almost by an order of magnitude, is XenForo - but it's commercial and closed-source (though it would work out a LOT less expensive than Discourse even if you tried to self-host TBH).

Thanks for explaining the different board softwares. Almost went with Discourse, but had a chat with the https://itsfoss.community/ owner and he was kind enough to explain the minimum server requirements to me and I backed out immediatly basically.

I love how you use the word "almost" there to mean nothing at all like "almost". I thought about Discourse too but the tech-stack is stupid. It's good don't get me wrong, but It's written in Ruby which is archaic and as you say the resource use is disgusting. Any PHP-based software will work fine on shared hosting, but the existing options all have their own issues (personally I think XenForo is by far the best of them right now, but it's closed-source and commercial wouldn't suit the purposes of Privacy Tools that's for sure).

Note the recent "high risk" MyBB RCE security vulnerability ... affecting all previous versions going back to 2006!
