I don't see anything explicitly wrong with Windows Defender, however I am a big believer that common sense is the best antivirus.
That, or dropping Windows altogether for MacOS or GNU+Linux/running Win VMs is your best option. Though if you're a sysadmin looking to install antivirus for a corporation, then yeah, clamwin is pretty hot.
PS: I'm only recommending MacOS on the basis that it has less marked share, and thus, less malware is developed for the OS.
